What Are Poppers? Understanding the Risks of Inhaling Nitrite Products

Health authorities are raising concerns about the increasing number of deaths and hospitalizations linked to the intentional inhalation or ingestion of nitrite products, commonly known as “poppers.” These products are often misused for recreational purposes, including to enhance sexual experiences, but pose significant health risks.

“Poppers” contain chemical substances similar to amyl nitrite, a prescription medication used to relieve chest pain. However, it’s crucial to understand that poppers have not undergone evaluation by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for safe use and are not approved for ingestion or inhalation. These products are often sold in small bottles resembling energy shots and are readily available online, in adult novelty stores, and various other locations. They are deceptively marketed under various guises, including:

  • Air fresheners
  • Liquid incense
  • Deodorizers
  • Leather cleaners
  • Cosmetics
  • Solvents
  • Nail polish removers

“It is critical to understand that inhaling or ingesting poppers poses a serious threat to your health,” warns Judy McMeekin, Pharm. D., Associate Commissioner for Regulatory Affairs. “These chemicals are caustic and can cause severe damage upon contact with skin or tissues. They can lead to breathing difficulties, dangerously low blood pressure, reduced blood oxygen levels, seizures, irregular heartbeats, coma, and even death. Under no circumstances should poppers be inhaled or ingested.”

Adding to the danger, manufacturers often employ packaging and labeling strategies that can mislead consumers into believing poppers are safe for inhalation or ingestion. They are frequently packaged in bottles similar to energy drinks and marketed under alluring brand names such as:

  • Rush
  • Super Rush
  • Jungle Juice
  • Locker Room
  • Sub-Zero
  • Iron Horse

“Do not be deceived. These poppers, commonly found online or in novelty shops, are unapproved and dangerous products that should never be inhaled or ingested, regardless of their packaging or labeling,” McMeekin emphasizes. “Using them as recreational drugs can lead to serious health consequences. They are simply not worth risking your life.”

If you suspect you are experiencing a severe side effect that puts your health at immediate risk, seek immediate medical attention by calling 9-1-1 or going to the nearest emergency room. To report a complaint or adverse event related to poppers, you can contact the health authorities.
