What is Alpha? Exploring Life, Faith, and Meaning

Alpha is a transformative approach designed to foster open and honest conversations about life’s significant questions, faith, and purpose. It provides a welcoming space for individuals to explore their beliefs and doubts.

“Going to Alpha was one of the best decisions I made in my life, because I learned the truth about who Jesus was.”

Melayna, Alpha Guest

Alpha is more than just a program; it’s a journey of discovery. It’s designed to be a providential gift, offering a fresh perspective on Christ. This approach is particularly effective at engaging both skeptics and those who have been deeply hurt by the Church, guiding them from a place of spiritual death to a vibrant life. The core of Alpha lies in its ability to create a safe and supportive environment where individuals can explore their questions about God and faith.

“Alpha is a providential gift for us all. Alpha has the freshness of Christ; it reflects the aroma of Christ.”

Bishop Felipe Estévez, Diocese of St. Augustine

“In our experience as donors, hosts and facilitators of Alpha courses, Alpha is uniquely effective at engaging both serious skeptics and those who have been deeply wounded by the Church. Absolutely nothing compares to watching individuals move from death to life before your eyes.”

Ben and Heather Grizzle

“Before I formed a relationship with Jesus, I felt on my own. Jesus changed that story.”

Our Mission: Equipping for Discovery

Alpha’s core mission involves equipping churches, ministries, and individuals to facilitate the discovery and development of a personal relationship with Jesus. Millions have experienced Alpha in recent years, underscoring its effectiveness as a tool for evangelism and spiritual exploration.

Unity Through Essentials

Alpha prioritizes the fundamental beliefs shared across Christian denominations. It operates on the principle that the common ground uniting Christians is far greater than their differences. Its effectiveness as an evangelistic tool is amplified when implemented by and through local churches. By focusing on these essential tenets of Christian faith, Alpha can be adapted for use in nearly any context, offering everyone the chance to witness the transformative power of the gospel in the lives of their friends.

Commitment to Quality

Alpha is dedicated to providing the Church with high-quality resources and tools that create an inviting atmosphere for conversations about Jesus. Resources like the Alpha Film Series and Alpha Youth Series guide guests on a multi-week exploration of faith. Each session delves into crucial aspects of the gospel in an accessible manner, encouraging individuals to explore their questions about life, faith, and God.

Giving it Away Freely

Alpha believes everyone deserves the opportunity to explore a relationship with Jesus, regardless of their location or financial situation. It is primarily funded through donations, allowing for the free distribution of all resources. This commitment to accessibility ensures that financial constraints do not prevent anyone from participating in Alpha.

How Alpha Works: Connection, Content, and Conversation

Alpha creates an environment that nurtures honest conversations about life’s biggest questions. It offers guests a chance to connect with others, share their thoughts and opinions, and encounter Jesus in a safe and supportive atmosphere.

Connection: Building Relationships

Whether it’s friends gathering in person or connecting online, these moments are crucial. Every Alpha session begins with a time for connection, whether over a meal or a beverage, to foster relaxation and build friendships.

Content: Engaging Talks

Alpha talks are designed to engage people from all backgrounds and spark conversation. They explore the big questions of life and faith and unpack the basics of Christian belief, addressing questions like “Who is Jesus?”, “Why and how do I pray?”, and “How does God guide us?”.

Conversation: Sharing Ideas

One of the most vital aspects of Alpha is the chance to share thoughts and ideas in a small group setting. Guests hear from others and have the chance to contribute in a judgment-free environment, fostering a sense of community and understanding.

The Global Alpha Story

Alpha began at Holy Trinity Brompton (HTB) Church in London in 1977. In 1990, Nicky Gumbel reshaped Alpha into a course for those outside the Church. The program quickly grew, attracting attention from churches of various denominations seeking effective evangelism tools.

The first Alpha conference occurred in 1993, with over 1,000 church leaders attending. As interest expanded, conferences were organized globally, and the original film series, Alpha with Nicky Gumbel, was produced in 1994.

Millions worldwide have participated in Alpha, which has been translated into numerous languages. Even as times change, Alpha continues to be an effective tool for reaching the lost with the gospel of Jesus Christ.
