Health care providers have raised concerns about the increasing number of deaths and hospitalizations linked to the intentional use of nitrite products, known as “poppers,” for recreational purposes, including to enhance sexual experiences.
These products, commonly called “poppers,” contain chemicals similar to amyl nitrite, a prescription medication used to alleviate chest pain. However, it’s crucial to understand that poppers have not undergone evaluation by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for safe use. Ingesting or inhaling these substances is inherently dangerous.
Poppers are often found in small bottles resembling energy shot drinks and are widely available online, in adult novelty stores, and other retail locations. They are deceptively marketed under various guises, such as:
- Air fresheners
- Liquid incense
- Deodorizers
- Leather cleaners
- Cosmetics
- Solvents
- Nail polish removers
Judy McMeekin, Pharm. D., Associate Commissioner for Regulatory Affairs, warns of the severe health risks, stating, “Make no mistake, ingesting or inhaling poppers seriously jeopardizes your health. These chemicals are caustic and can cause damage upon contact with skin or tissues. They can lead to breathing difficulties, dangerously low blood pressure, reduced blood oxygen levels, seizures, irregular heartbeats, coma, and even death. Under no circumstances should they be ingested or inhaled.”
Adding to the danger, manufacturers often employ packaging and labeling that can mislead consumers into believing poppers are safe for inhalation or ingestion. They are frequently packaged in bottles similar to energy shots and branded with enticing names like:
- Rush
- Super Rush
- Jungle Juice
- Locker Room
- Sub-Zero
- Iron Horse
McMeekin emphasizes the deceptive nature of these products: “Don’t be fooled. These poppers, commonly found online or in novelty stores, are unapproved and should never be inhaled or ingested, regardless of their packaging, labeling, or display. When used recreationally, they pose significant health risks and are simply not worth risking your life.”
In case of a serious side effect that poses an immediate health threat, it is crucial to call 9-1-1 or seek immediate care at your nearest emergency room. To report a complaint or adverse event (illness or injury), individuals are encouraged to contact the appropriate authorities.
