The Navajo people, among other Western Native American tribes, believe in Skinwalkers, supernatural beings capable of transforming into animals. This ability allows them to move swiftly and secretly, blending seamlessly into the natural world. Becoming a Skinwalker is not a simple transformation, however. It is said to be a dark path, achieved through initiation into the Witchery Way. This initiation is associated with horrific acts, most notably the murder of a close relative, especially a sibling. Other deeply disturbing acts like necrophilia and grave robbing are also tied to this dark transformation. Once initiated, a person is believed to become something truly sinister, embodying “pure evil” in the Navajo worldview. Interestingly, within this cultural context, witches and Skinwalkers are predominantly considered to be men, adding another layer to the chilling nature of the legend.
