What is Project Blue Beam? Conspiracy Theory Revived Amidst US Drone Sightings

Mysterious drone sightings across the United States have recently surged, reigniting interest in the Project Blue Beam conspiracy theory. This theory alleges that global elites are plotting to stage a fake alien invasion.

Since mid-November, numerous reports of drone sightings have emerged from New Jersey and New York, with thousands claiming to have witnessed drones in the sky. Despite a month of investigation, the FBI has yet to identify the source or operators of these drones.

This lack of explanation has fueled suspicion, leading some lawmakers to accuse government agencies of withholding information. A variety of theories have been proposed to explain the drones, yet the information vacuum has allowed speculation, including elaborate conspiracy theories, to thrive.

The resurgence of Project Blue Beam gained traction when Donald Trump supporter and celebrity Roseanne Barr posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday: “Now you see why I mention Project Blue Beam every week on my podcast…..” By Sunday, her post had amassed over 2 million views.

Adam Kinzinger, a former Republican congressman and Trump critic, responded to Barr’s post, warning, “Here we go. Project Blue Beam. Roseanne here is pushing this. It posits that the govt is faking an alien invasion to usher in the anti-Christ and one world govt. This is this year’s QAnon. Pay attention, don’t pretend this is just the fringe.”

Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones also recently posted about Project Blue Beam on X, sharing an interview with ufologist Steven Greer concerning “how Project Blue Beam will be used.” Adding to the online buzz, the account Charlie Kirk News, a fan page for right-wing influencer Charlie Kirk, posted on Friday, “WE ARE F****D. THE DRONES ARE PROJECT BLUE BEAM,” which garnered 7.8 million views by Sunday.

Decoding Project Blue Beam: Origins and Core Tenets

Project Blue Beam is a conspiracy theory that emerged in the 1990s, attributed to Canadian journalist Serge Monast, who passed away in 1996. The theory centers on a supposed clandestine plan by global elites to establish a single, totalitarian world government. This would be achieved, according to the theory, by fabricating celestial or supernatural events using advanced technology developed by organizations like NASA.

Initial predictions by proponents of Project Blue Beam pointed to 1995, then 1996, and later, following Monast’s death, the year 2000 as the project’s commencement date.

At the heart of the theory is the concept of using sophisticated holographic technology to project large-scale, realistic images into the sky. These projections would depict religious figures or alien invasions, carefully tailored to resonate with the specific cultural and religious beliefs of different populations globally. The objective of these staged events would be to sow widespread panic, destabilize existing religious and social structures, and ultimately pave the way for a new world order.

The Alleged Stages of Project Blue Beam

The Project Blue Beam conspiracy theory outlines a multi-stage operation designed to manipulate global society:

  1. Artificial Earthquakes and Archaeological Discoveries: The first stage involves creating artificial earthquakes in strategically chosen locations around the world. These earthquakes are intended to “unearth” supposedly hidden archaeological artifacts. The purpose of these staged discoveries would be to discredit the foundations of major world religions by “proving” them false and misleading to the global population.

  2. Holographic Sky Projections of Divine Figures: The second stage would introduce large-scale holographic projections in the sky. These projections would simulate the return of various divine figures and deities, each tailored to specific regions and their dominant religious beliefs. This stage aims to create mass religious fervor and confusion. Following these individualized religious displays, the theory suggests a unified “god” image would be projected, speaking to everyone on Earth, aiming to create a sense of global spiritual unity – albeit under false pretenses.

  3. Telepathic Electronic Communication and Simulated Alien Invasion: The final stage delves into mind control and deception. Project Blue Beam supposedly involves technology capable of manipulating human thoughts, making individuals believe they are in direct telepathic communication with deities or otherworldly forces. Culminating in a simulated alien invasion, this stage aims to instill widespread fear and chaos, providing the justification for implementing authoritarian global control under the guise of restoring order and protecting humanity from an extraterrestrial threat.

Expert Skepticism Regarding Drone Sightings

Newsweek consulted with Vijay Kumar, a mechanical engineering professor at the University of Pennsylvania, to gain expert insight into the drone sightings. Kumar expressed skepticism that the drones are operated by a foreign adversary, suggesting that the evidence points more towards a U.S. government operation.

“Firstly, it’s not a coincidence, I think, that all these sightings have been near military bases. I’ll just leave it at that,” Kumar stated, hinting at potential government involvement or at least awareness.

He also noted that larger drones have reportedly displayed standard aircraft lighting, as required by U.S. airspace regulations. “If I was an adversary, I would take great trouble to conceal what I was doing,” he explained. “So that leads me to believe that it’s not a military power that’s trying to attack the U.S.”

Missy Cummings, director of the Mason Autonomy and Robotics Center at George Mason University, offered a different perspective. She questioned the reported size of the drones and proposed they might not even be drones at all.

Cummings suggested possibilities such as small, manned aircraft or commercially available small- to medium-sized drones. “It is highly unlikely these are large drones as you describe, and if they are drones, they likely would be controlled by line-of-sight, so possibly from the water but probably not miles out to sea,” Cummings concluded, indicating a more terrestrial and less technologically advanced explanation for the sightings than a sophisticated, covert operation like Project Blue Beam.
