For me, this movie is the ideal escape from the everyday hustle. It’s genuinely sweet, utterly charming, and boasts a truly delightful cast. And of course, Colin Firth is simply outstanding. Some critics might say this film is only for those “under 13 or over 80,” but they completely miss the point. There are many of us who will forever adore Mr. Darcy and are constantly searching for more Colin Firth movies. He’s undeniably gorgeous in this role, and thankfully, he’s on screen a lot. Honestly, I would happily pay just to hear him read the phone book, which is why I’ll be seeing this movie again and will definitely be first in line for the DVD.
It was a bit odd to see Anna Chancellor cast as his fiancée, especially since she plays this part with a similar vibe to her Caroline Bingley character. Just like in Pride and Prejudice, her character here isn’t quite right for Mr. Darcy… or in this case, Lord Dashwood.
While some have criticized the movie for being too saccharine, as a hopeless romantic, I absolutely adored the ending. I left the theater feeling genuinely uplifted. (It reminded me of how I felt after “Bridget Jones’s Diary,” especially that final kiss – probably the best movie kiss ever! But I digress, apologies.) I know this movie isn’t destined for Academy Awards, but it’s a truly wonderful way to spend ninety minutes.
