The Attorney General stands as the chief legal officer and top law enforcement authority of the state, dedicated to safeguarding and advocating for the citizens and interests of California through a wide array of responsibilities. This crucial role encompasses protecting Californians from various threats and fostering community safety, conserving California’s remarkable natural environment, upholding civil rights legislation, and providing assistance to individuals affected by identity theft, mortgage fraud, unlawful business practices, and other forms of consumer-related offenses.
Leading a large team of over 5,600 professionals, including attorneys, investigators, sworn peace officers, and support staff, the Attorney General undertakes several key functions:
- Representing the State of California in both civil and criminal legal proceedings across all court levels, from trial courts to the Supreme Courts of California and the United States. This ensures the state’s legal position is robustly defended and prosecuted where necessary.
- Acting as the legal advisor for state officials and, with limited exceptions, for state departments, boards, and commissions. This function provides essential legal guidance to the state government’s operations.
- Supporting district attorneys, local law enforcement agencies, and federal and international criminal justice bodies in their efforts to administer justice effectively. This collaborative approach strengthens the overall justice system.
- Enhancing California’s law enforcement capabilities by overseeing statewide initiatives against narcotics, aiding criminal investigations, delivering forensic science services, managing identification and information services, and providing essential telecommunications support. These services are vital for modern law enforcement.
- Directing programs and specialized projects aimed at identifying and combating fraudulent, unfair, and illegal activities that prey on consumers or jeopardize public safety. This proactive approach protects the public from various forms of exploitation and harm.
The Attorney General’s position is established under the state Constitution and is filled through a statewide election every four years, coinciding with the election cycle for other key state offices such as Governor and Lieutenant Governor. Reflecting a commitment to limited terms in office, California voters in 1990 established a two-term limit for these statewide positions, including the Attorney General.
