We’re all looking for ways to simplify our skincare routines. It’s easy to accumulate products without fully understanding their purpose. Like my friend, many people find themselves questioning the necessity of each step and product, especially when budgets are tight. She had the basics covered – cleanser, exfoliants, serums, moisturizers, and SPF. But toner, a product she used religiously, was a mystery. When she asked me, “What does toner actually do?”, I realized I didn’t have a truly comprehensive answer.
To get to the bottom of this skincare query, I consulted with cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Paul Jarrod Frank of pfrankmd.com. I asked him directly: “What does toner actually do for the skin?”
Dr. Frank explained that toner serves several key functions. Firstly, it plays a vital role in balancing your skin’s pH levels. When your skin’s pH is unbalanced, it can’t function optimally. Toner helps restore this balance. Secondly, toner acts as a second cleanse, effectively removing any residual makeup, dirt, and impurities that your cleanser might have missed.
But the benefits of toner extend beyond these primary functions. Depending on the specific type of toner you choose, it can also offer additional advantages. Some toners are formulated to minimize the appearance of pores, creating a smoother skin texture. Others are designed to provide hydration, adding an extra layer of moisture to your routine. Furthermore, certain toners are enriched with antioxidants, which can add a protective layer against environmental stressors when layered under a serum.
So, is toner an absolute must-have in your skincare regimen? Not necessarily, Dr. Frank clarifies. However, incorporating toner into your routine can be a beneficial step. The key is to select a toner that is appropriate for your individual skin type. Reading the product label is crucial.
- For oily skin, look for toners labeled as “clarifying” or “mattifying.” These formulations often contain ingredients that help control excess sebum production and minimize shine.
- If you have dry skin, opt for “hydrating” toners. These are typically formulated with moisturizing ingredients to replenish and lock in hydration.
- For those concerned with wrinkles or sun spots, consider toners with “age-defense” ingredients, such as antioxidants. These can help combat free radical damage and promote a more youthful complexion.
- If you have combination skin, seek out toners that are designed to “balance” the skin. These aim to address the needs of both oily and dry areas.
Currently, I’m particularly drawn to the Burt’s Bees Rosewater Toner, available at burtsbees.com. Its formula includes aloe vera and glycerin, both known for their hydrating properties. My editor, Rachel, is a fan of Ole Henriksen’s African Red Tea Face Mist, found at olehenriksen.com. She finds it effective for clarifying her skin and reducing the appearance of pores.
