What Happened to Dan Schneider? Nickelodeon Producer Apologizes for On-Set Behavior

Former Nickelodeon producer Dan Schneider, known for creating numerous popular children’s shows such as iCarly, All That, and The Amanda Show, has publicly apologized for his conduct on set. This apology comes in the wake of a new documentary, Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV, which details allegations of abuse and inappropriate behavior during his time at the children’s television channel. Schneider departed Nickelodeon in 2018 following an internal investigation that substantiated claims of verbal abuse against staff members.

The Quiet on Set docuseries presents a range of accusations, including instances of Schneider making sexually suggestive jokes and creating an uncomfortable environment for those working on his shows. Jenny Kilgen, a former writer for The Amanda Show, recounted an incident where Schneider allegedly implied a quid pro quo, suggesting a massage in exchange for her sketch ideas being used on the show. Kilgen explained that while these requests were often framed as jokes, there was an underlying pressure, as disagreeing with Schneider could potentially jeopardize one’s job.

In a recent YouTube video, Schneider addressed the allegations and expressed regret for his past actions. He described watching the documentary as “very difficult,” forcing him to confront behavior he now recognizes as “embarrassing” and “regretful.” “I definitely owe some people a pretty strong apology,” Schneider stated, acknowledging the impact of his actions. He specifically apologized for the inappropriate jokes made in writers’ rooms, admitting they were “wrong” and expressing remorse to anyone who was subjected to or witnessed such behavior.

The documentary also highlighted the case of Drake Bell, who alleged sexual abuse by Brian Peck, a former dialogue coach who worked closely with Schneider on All That and The Amanda Show. Peck was convicted of child abuse in 2004. Schneider described the episode concerning Peck and Bell as the “darkest part” of his career, expressing visible distress while watching the documentary and acknowledging the pain experienced by those involved.

Nickelodeon has released a statement in response to the docuseries and Schneider’s subsequent apology. While stating they cannot verify claims from productions “decades ago,” the network asserted its commitment to investigating all formal complaints and prioritizing the well-being of everyone involved in their productions.
