Powerball, a multi-state lottery game administered by the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL), offers participants the chance to win substantial prizes, including a potentially life-changing jackpot. Before each official drawing, a Power Play multiplier (ranging from 2 to 5, and occasionally 10 when the advertised jackpot is $150 million or less) is randomly selected. During the drawing, five white balls are drawn from a pool of 69, and one red Powerball is drawn from a pool of 26. Players win prizes by matching these numbers to those on their tickets.
Matching all five white balls and the red Powerball wins the jackpot. However, there are eight other ways to win cash prizes by matching various combinations of numbers.
Powerball Prizes and Payouts
With the exception of the jackpot, all Powerball prizes have set payout amounts. The jackpot prize, however, is shared among all winners across all participating Powerball states. Winners have the option to receive the jackpot as 30 annual payments or as a single, reduced cash payment. If no one matches all the numbers to win the jackpot, the jackpot amount rolls over to the next Powerball drawing, increasing the potential prize.
Claiming Your Powerball Prize
Powerball prizes must be claimed in the state where the winning ticket was purchased. In Florida, for instance, prizes must be claimed within 180 days of the winning drawing date. Federal income taxes are withheld from Powerball prizes as mandated by the Internal Revenue Code at the time of payment. Winners are responsible for any additional federal, state, and/or local taxes. In Florida, prizes up to $1 million can be claimed at a Florida Lottery district office, while prizes exceeding $1 million must be claimed at the Lottery Headquarters in Tallahassee. Further details on claiming prizes can be found on the Florida Lottery website.
