Navigating the DNC 2024: Public Speaking Platform Schedule and Application

The City of Chicago is committed to upholding First Amendment rights during the 2024 Democratic National Convention (DNC). To facilitate peaceful assembly and free speech, the city, via the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT), will provide a designated speaker’s platform equipped with sound amplification. This platform will be available near the United Center from August 19th to 22nd, 2024.

For those interested in utilizing this opportunity to address the public during the DNC, the application process to secure a speaking slot is straightforward. CDOT will begin accepting applications for time slots on Tuesday, August 6th, starting at 9:00 a.m. CST. The application window will remain open until Saturday, August 10th, closing at 5:00 p.m. CST. It’s important to note these times if you are planning to apply.

The speaker’s platform will be situated in or near Park 578, located at 1919 W Maypole Ave. To request a 45-minute timeslot on the city-provided speaking platform, interested individuals and organizations should complete the DNC Speakers Platform Request Form. This form should then be emailed to [email protected].

Speaking slots are scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. CST each day, with subsequent slots starting at the top of each hour. The final speaking slot each day will commence at 6:00 p.m. Each slot is 45 minutes long, providing ample time for speakers to convey their message. Applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. However, priority consideration will be given to groups that have previously applied for parade or assembly permits near the United Center for any day between August 19th and 22nd, 2024. Each speaker or organization is limited to one timeslot, but applicants can list multiple preferred alternate times. Successful applicants will receive a confirmation of their approved time.

For detailed regulations regarding the use of the sound stage, please refer to the DNC Sound Stage Regulations document. Beyond the designated speaking platform, demonstrators will also have the opportunity to march within sight and sound of the United Center. Specific route details will be announced following the resolution of ongoing litigation. This setup ensures various avenues for public expression during the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
