What’s the Time? Discovering Hours of Joy in Hand Sewing

I’ve been deeply immersed in crafting my 1790s hand-sewn stays over the past few weeks, an experience that has surprisingly transformed my perspective on hand sewing. Historically, I’ve always been a staunch opponent of hand sewing. The idea of dedicating countless hours to stitches that would likely remain unseen seemed utterly baffling. It struck me as an enormous waste of time, motivated only by a desire for bragging rights – something that held no appeal for me. However, I believe I finally understand the allure. For me now, hand sewing a garment isn’t about seeking recognition or achieving ultimate historical precision. The unexpected revelation is that hand sewing is genuinely relaxing and, dare I say, fun! Who would have guessed?

During my graduate school days, I once lamented to my favorite professor about the extensive time commitment required for a complex printmaking project. He responded with a memorable anecdote:

A traveling salesman was driving through the countryside when he noticed a farmer holding a pig aloft under an apple tree. Intrigued, the salesman stopped and reversed his car. Indeed, the farmer was holding a pig, which was happily munching on apples directly from the branches. “Why are you holding that pig up to eat apples?” the salesman inquired. “Because he prefers the fresh apples right off the tree to the bruised ones on the ground,” the farmer replied. “I understand,” said the salesman. “But isn’t feeding your pig in that manner a tremendous waste of time?” The farmer paused, pondered for a moment, and then stated, “Perhaps you’re right. But then again, what’s the time to a pig?”

The essence of this story, as I interpret it, boils down to this: how else would I be utilizing those hours that I was so concerned about “wasting”? Would I be passively watching television? Aimlessly scrolling through the internet? Engaging in trivial games on my phone? Or simply sitting around, feeling bored? Alternatively, I could be dedicating my spare moments to an activity that brings me joy and results in the creation of something beautiful. Yes, it is a lengthy process, and there are undoubtedly quicker methods to achieve the same outcome, but so what? Isn’t the artistic process itself worth the investment of time? It has been truly delightful to work on a project free from strict deadlines. I’ve been carrying a piece of my stays with me, stitching a few rows whenever I find myself with a spare moment or feeling restless. I’ve relished having an activity that keeps my fidgety hands occupied, and it’s incredibly satisfying to witness the improvement in my stitching compared to my initial, less-than-perfect lines. I’ve even developed the sensitivity to discern between a sharp and a dull needle. Like all beneficial meditative practices, consistent hand sewing sharpens your awareness of details and enhances your connection with your surroundings. I find that incredibly rewarding.

After three weeks of dedicated work, I’m now entering the final phases of this project. I am currently assembling the various components and sewing the eyelets. The remaining steps involve binding the edges and adding the lining. The project has progressed much faster than I initially anticipated, and I’m already contemplating another small hand-work project to fill the creative space once this one is complete. I’ve come to appreciate the value of slowing down and embracing the present moment – whether it’s smelling the roses, savoring the apples, or meticulously stitching the channels of a garment. After all, what’s the time to a pig seamstress who finds joy in every stitch?
